Great Radio and iPod Player! Review by
Quality

I work in a very noisy manufacturing plant where all workers must wear ear protection. This plant is in a large metal building which causes very poor radio reception and most radios can pick up only two stations, so I bought this radio with the idea in mind of plugging my ipod into it so I could listen to any music I wish. I've found, though, that this radio has excellent reception and there are very few stations it can't pick up inside the plant at work. It also works quite well with my ipod. The radio has excellent volume, too, and can easily be heard above the noise of the plant even while wearing ear protection. The radio plays strong base tones and the tone can't be adjusted, but I enjoy a good base response anyway and feel this helps the radio be heard above the noise of the plant. I've read other reviews of this radio on other websites and seen that users have complained that the volume drops off if they plug in their ipod or mp3 player. I use an ipod and haven't found this to be the case as long as I turn up the volume of my ipod. Unlike most radios that are short and wide, this one is tall and narrow which gives it a footprint I like because it doesn't take up as much space on my work bench. The radio is very user friendly and easy to operate even while wearing the protective gloves I wear at work. I also moonlight doing home repairs and the radio goes with me on those sites, too, where I can still easily hear it above my power tools and the clock, which is always visible on its face, is handy for telling me when it's time to break for lunch and how many hours I've worked. Since the radio is relatively light, it's not difficult to pack along anywhere one wishes to take it. It's also handy that this is part of Makita's cordless tool system as I can plug in a rechargeable battery and use it even in places where there is no electricity. The radio has only two drawbacks I've found: the radio has an A/C adapter and cord for plugging it in and the cord is rather fine, making it rather fragile and awkward. The other drawback is that I can't access the auxiliary port in the back for plugging in my ipod if a slide-type cordless battery is installed in the back. However there is still a port in the front I can plug the ipod into. The slide-type batteries for Makita cordless tools are my preference, as they are the lithium ion batteries which I feel are much better than the stem-type NiCad batteries. I've seen other reviewers rate this radio lower because it doesn't charge the cordless battery while plugged in, but I've also read that DeWalt has a patent on that feature, so if that's the case, it's understandable that this radio can't include that feature. If not for the two design flaws I've mentioned, I'd have given this radio a 5-star rating. Pros: Easy To Use, Good Safety Features, Easy To Store, Good Grip, Powerful Cons: Can't Access Rear Aux Best Uses: Home Repair, In The Field, In The Workshop, In The Yard I would describe myself as: 'Professional'
